Funny Girls building
History
The original concept of the venue was envisaged by its current owner and local boy Basil Newby who spent the early part of his career working as a blue coat at a Pontins holiday camp. Basil is now the owner of a number of gay venues in the Blackpool area which are run by his management company Pink Leisure. Blackpool has become a popular destination for the UK gay community and many local businesses such as hotels and guest houses cater specifically for the gay visitor, the gay demographic has now become affectionately known as the 'pink pound' (Basil likes to call it the peaceful pound!).
When Funny Girls opened in 1994 the venue was originally sited on Queen Street (next to The Walkabout theme pub) and became so popular that in 2002 the venue had to eventually re-locate to bigger premises on Dickinson Road which is still it's present location, the opening show at the new venue was performed by the legendary Joan Collins. The current location was originally an Odeon cinema, and the building still retains its Art-deco style external architecture.
Funny Girls on TV
In the late 90's Funny Girls gained National exposure by becoming the subject of a 6 part fly on the wall documentary series, the series followed the daily goings-on of the staff and entertainers and also an entertaining local builder called Kevin (the building was being re-furnished at the same time as the documentary was being filmed). The venue was also used for scenes in the BBC drama 'Blackpool', which stared actor and previous Doctor Who Neil Tennant, and the dancers and cast have also performed in two royal variety shows.
