Fanny Brice the Original Funny Girl is an interesting read, however, it is a bit wordy in places and unfortunately unless you are up on your entertainers of the 20's and early 30's there are a lot of names that are not all that familiar to a younger reader such as myself (even though I am in my 70's). Also there are a lot of pages at the end of the book that have no meaning at all so the book seems to be cut off half way through. Since I do enjoy reading about entertainers of the past and have seem both Funny Girl and Funny Lady I did enjoy the book.
Fanny Brice: The Original Funny Girl by Herbert Goldman is an older out-of-print book that became available on Kindle for 2.99, so I bought it, being interested in the back story of the Funny Girl. She was a New Yorker, a first generation American Jewess, who loved entertaining from her youth. Brice managed to become a very successful vaudeville and radio performer in spite of a limited 4th grade education. Her success with men, however, never could compare with her success in vaudeville. She managed to marry a succession of selfish, self-absorbed men, replaying her mother's own lack of success in choosing a similar type to marry.

Her performing style did not translate to movies or television, however. Most of Brice's fame and success are attributed to her vaudeville experience, where her particular style of entertaining was successful with vaudeville audiences. She was less successful on Broadway, where audiences were generally more sophisticated.

This book was an entertaining read, but not a necessarily great one. I ended up feeling sorry for her in the end.
Loved reading about Fannie Brice. I've been a fan since Baby Snooks. Wish there had been more about that show. Back "in the day" we didn't learn much about the radio stars' personal lives. Liked the comments from other people who were involved in Fannie's life.
