The Newest Girl Effect Video: The Clock is Ticking

From activist and writer Gloria Steinem: At the heart of Girls Speak Out is its success in bringing together girls from diverse backgrounds, and showing through links to pre-history and today's events  that symbols in every culture and continent speak of a past---and a future- when females were respected in authority. It was originated by and has depended on Andrea's rare ability to bring people of different ages and backgrounds together, and to challenge such deep and unfair divisions as racism, sexism and economic class.

We're here to offer girls what they're missing in other places, and make sure they have the tools to build a complete and satisfying life.

We know that girls are strong, they bounce back from challenges no matter how unfair and  scary, and that girls have answers. We believe that any of the problems children and adults face today, especially when our gender is used to control us, can be solved with and by girls.
We know times are hard globally as a financial crisis affects each of us. We continue to be inspired because the need for change continues; and girls' strengths are priceless, timeless and enduring.

Heard about Girls' Rights?  Listen to this: Girls are born with important rights that are guaranteed by most nations on this planet.... You own the right to food, water, an excellent education, clothes, safety in and out of the house, a good place to live, to decide when and whether to have sex, children and to practice a religion, to choose your future and your friends and partners, live free from abuse and neglect...and to grow up independent and strong.

Check out the Girls' Global Plan of Action, one of the first speak-outs by girls!

We collaborate with groups and indidivuals, and we are not a traditional membership organization. We want to help create leaders, not followers, and we move with you as you move ahead. We listen and share what we learn. We are creating a lasting network of committed girls and women who resonate worldwide.

We can help you name and change what challenges you may face growing up, and what to do to spread the word about girls' strengths. We listen to each of you, and together we have the power to change the world with and for girls...

Funny Baby Girls Biography

While you're changing your newborn baby's diapers, you might notice that their genitalia isn't exactly what you expected. Don't be alarmed—depending on your baby's gestational age, his or her genitals might appear different. So what is considered normal? It's not unusual for newborn baby's genitals to have these characteristics:

Baby girls—especially ones born prematurely—may have a noticeably large clitoris and inner labia. A full-term baby girl will have a prominent outer labia.
Your newborn baby girl might have some whitish discharge or bloody mucus (like a "mini-period") in their diaper during the first few weeks. That's perfectly normal.
Premature baby boys tend to have flat scrotum with undescended testicles. In a full-term baby boy, the testicles should have descended and the scrotum might appear swollen.

If vaginal bleeding continues beyond the first week or if scrotal swelling doesn't disappear after six months, consult with a doctor. Chances are that everything is fine, but better safe than sorry!
It's hard to believe that once-wobbly infant of yours is standing on his own two feet these days. (Wasn't it just two minutes ago that he was working on his tummy time?) Sure, he may be holding on to something to keep him from plopping to the ground, but isn't that what you feel like at times, too?
What You're Thinking: "If he can stand on his own, surely he'll be able to fix himself a bottle any day now."
Baby Milestones

She may be pulling herself up to stand by this point in baby's physical development. And some babies may also be able to climb up on toys by now, so be careful not to leave any big toys in the crib.
Encourage your baby's developing gross motor skills by making an obstacle course on a carpeted floor. Put pillows, piles of laundry, big stuffed animals, siblings, etc., in her way and let her figure out how to get to where she wants to go.
Your baby may say "Mama" or "Dada" now, but she still probably says them randomly to the wrong people ... she's getting there! Also, unless there's been lots of coaching (and it's OK to admit if there has been!), she'll probably say "Dada" first, but only because it's an easier sound to make! It takes a lot more energy to bring the lips together to make the "mmmm" sound—unless you're staring at a white chocolate cheesecake.

Mommy Milestones

You are more concerned with baby Halloween costumes than what you'll wear to the upcoming wedding you're attending.
You admit that those crayons you bought yesterday were more for you than for your baby (we know you were doodling flowers with the Periwinkle and the Sea Green).
You couldn't resist and bought personalized stationery for your baby ("thank-you cards for his first birthday," you rationalized).
You do a mean impersonation of an elephant (trunk motion and everything).
You no longer get jealous when your baby's eyes light up when she sees the sitter, because it means you can leave guilt-free. (OK, you can leave with less guilt).
