She has been ridiculed, stared at in the street and called 'the world's ugliest woman' by insensitive cyber bullies.

But, after years of misery and self doubt, Lizzie Velasquez says she can finally shrug off the hurtful comments about her looks as 'just words'.

Miss Velasquez, from Austin, Texas, was born without adipose tissue - meaning she has no body fat and, despite eating up to 60 small meals a day, remains at a delicate 4.4stone (58lbs).

The rare condition still baffles doctors and is thought to affect just two other people worldwide.

Miss Velazquez has now written a second book about her struggle to be accepted and hopes it will help others in a similar position.

Speaking to Dr Drew Pinsky on Tuesday night about her experiences, Miss Velasquez said when cyber bullies first started attacking her online it was hard.

THE SYNDROME SO RARE IT REMAINS UNDIAGNOSED

Lizzie Velasquez was born without adipose tissue, meaning she has no body fat and, despite eating up to 60 small meals a day, remains at a delicate 4.4stone (58lbs).

Her syndrome is so rare that to this day it remains undiagnosed. Besides Miss Velasquez there are only two oter people in the world known to suffer from the condition.

The main symptom is the inability to gain weight. Miss Velasquez is also blind in one eye and has limited vision in the other.

The 23-year-old says her condition is particularly puzzling because it takes on aspects of other syndromes, including progeria.

Miss Velasquez says she has the pointed nose, small mouth and ageing skin of someone with progeria but her syndrome is not though to be terminal.

As she says on her website her condition is 'just one big mystery', but she remains hopeful that one day doctors will discover just what it is and how to treat it.

She told Dr Drew: 'I'm human... of course these things are going to hurt... (but) I'm not going to let those things define me.'

Eventually Miss Velasquez realised the people issuing the hurtful comments online were just cowards hiding behind a computer screen.

'At the end of the day, these are just words,' Miss Velasquez told Dr Drew. 'If they are so proud, then they should show their face.'

When asked how she deals with being constantly stared at in the street Miss Velasquez said: 'I'm starting to want to go up to these people and introduce myself or give them my card and say, "Hi, I'm Lizzie - maybe you should stop staring and start learning".'

Miss Velasquez also revealed she does not have any desire to look like a beautiful celebrity.

She said: 'I feel I'm really glad I don't look like the celebrities out there who are beautiful, because there are a lot of stereotypes attached to that.

'People think "she's so pretty, she must be really dumb". Since I don't look like that it's better because people can get to know the real me.'

Miss Velasquez was born four weeks prematurely weighing just 2lb 10oz. Doctors found there was minimal amniotic fluid protecting her in the womb.

'They told us they had no idea how she could have survived,' Miss Velasquez's mother Rita, 45, a church secretary, said.

'We had to buy dolls' clothes from the toy store because baby clothes were too big.' Doctors could not make a diagnosis so they prepared Miss Velasquez's parents for the worst.

'They told us she would never be able to walk, talk or have a normal life,' said her mother, who has two other children with Miss Velasquez's father Lupe - both children are of average height and weight.

Despite the grim prognosis Miss Velasquez's brain, bones and internal organs developed normally but she was always very small.

At the age of two she was still only 15lbs - the same as the average five-month-old baby.

Born with two brown eyes, when Miss Velasquez was four the right began to cloud and change hue. Doctors then discovered she had gone blind in that eye.

'They still don't know why it happened but now I have one blue and one brown eye.'

Miss Velasquez's case has fascinated doctors all over the world and she is part of a genetic study run by Professor Abhimanyu Garg at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Proessor Garg and his team now believe Miss Velasquez may have a form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome (NPS), which causes accelerated ageing, fat loss from the face and body, and tissue degeneration. People with PRS often have triangular and prematurely aged faces with a pointy nose.

He said: 'I am aware of a small number of people that have similar conditions to Lizzie but each case is slightly different.

'We cannot predict what will happen to Lizzie in the future, as the medical community are yet to document older people with NPS.

'However Lizzie is lucky to have healthy teeth, organs and bones so the outlook is good. We will continue to study her case and learn from her.'

Miss Velasquez doesn't take medication but she relies on vitamin supplements and iron to stay healthy.  It is thought she should be able to conceive naturally without passing the condition to her children.

Her new book is out on September 13.

It may be one of the great ironies of the musical theatre that vaudevillian and radio comedienne Fanny Brice was eventually eclipsed by the singer-actress who first played her on stage. Though there are some film and audio recordings of Brice's performances, the collective memory of Streisand as Brice—thanks to the film version of this show and Streisand's recordings of Brice songs "Second Hand Rose," "I'd Rather Be Blue" and "My Man"—is far more dominant than knowledge of Brice's performances themselves. That theater companies have avoided producing Funny Girl for the inevitable comparisons to Streisand is obvious. Fanny Brice herself might be reluctant to play Fanny Brice for fear of comparisons to Streisand.

That said, in Broadway actress Sara Sheperd, the Drury Lane has found an actress willing and able to make the part her own. Those who remember Streisand's every inflection and interpretation from wearing out the soundtrack or video recordings will note Sheperd's differences right up front. With a tougher demeanor than Streisand and hair design to make Ms. Sheperd look more like the real thing, Sheperd gives a new and authentic take on the vaudeville star. With that said, director William Osetek makes an admirable effort to revive the show on the merits, which may be slimmer without Streisand than we remember.

Jule Styne's great melodies have never really left us and the lyrics by Bob Merrill are clever and crisp. Fanny gets most of them and Ms. Sheperd handles them all admirably. From the comedy numbers through the ballads, she belts as well as she croons. We get to hear six of the eight songs that were not in the film ("Henry Street" and "Find Yourself a Man" are not performed in this production). In Sheperd's hands, we're reminded that "The Music That Makes Me Dance" is as good a torch song as Brice's "My Man," which replaced it in the film version of Funny Girl. There's also the catchy duet for Fanny and Nick, "I Want to Be Seen with You Tonight," as well as Rose and Eddie's comedy number "Who Taught Her Everything?"

Beyond the score, though, is the rather talky book by Isobel Lennart (a successful screenwriter of the '40s, '50s and '60s) that's heavy on backstage clichés and light on character development—even for Fanny, who seems to be about nothing more than her love of performing and her obsession with husband Nick Arnstein (Paul Anthony Stewart). Lennart's men are particularly two-dimensional and aren't helped by the wooden performances of Stewart as Arnstein and Marc Grapey as impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. Jameson Cooper, who boasts a solid singing voice and considerable stage presence, does much better as Fanny's pal Eddie Ryan. As Fanny's mother Rose, Catherine Smitko makes a great wise-cracking Jewish mom without descending into stereotypes.

The ensemble of eight executes the snappy vaudeville-inspired dances of Matt Raftery with precision, and Styne's score is sung winningly by the ensemble and principals, though sometimes conducted at sluggish tempi by music director Ben Johnson. Costumes by Elizabeth Flauto capture the looks of the 20th century's first few decades and for the production numbers suggest the glamour of a real Ziegfeld Follies production. Jack Magaw's set is most literal in its depiction of Fanny's dressing room—placed far stage left on the apron. Minimal sets are used within the main proscenium area where the primary action, suggested here as in the film, are meant to be Fanny's memories of her life before and with Nick.

We can applaud Osetek and his team (Gary Griffin is co-credited with Osetek for the production conception and David New is acknowledged as Associate Director) for returning to the piece's roots and delivering a musical biography of Fanny Brice as if Ms. Streisand never existed. They may have revealed, though, that the reasons Funny Girl has been seldom revived go beyond the difficulty of comparisons to Streisand and the fearless way she made such a star turn out of a dramatically underwritten character. Funny Girl as a piece of musical theater writing is a better than average musical of its era, thanks to the Styne-Merrill score, but not in the same league as Fiddler, Hello, Dolly! or other classics that debuted in the early 1960s. If audiences go to appreciate the musical numbers as performed by Sheperd and company, they'll have a good enough time.

Pam Chandler also makes time for an activity she calls the "bio-poem." In this lesson, students use a format and fill in terms that apply to themselves or another individual and construct revealing individualized poetry.

"A bio-poem is a form of poetry using a prescribed or structured format," explained Chandler. "Although it follows a 'formula,' this form still allows for creativity on the part of the writer." She gives students the following instructions:

"On each line of your poem provide only the information requested for that line. For lines 4 through 9, you should begin the line with the underlined words given; you supply the information in the parentheses. You may complete the line with single words or with phrases. Your object is to show the depth of your understanding about the character."

    Line 1-- First Name
Line 2-- Title given to the character
Line 3-- Four words that describe the character
Line 4-- Lover of (three items, objects or ideas)
Line 5-- Who believes (one idea or concept)
Line 6-- Who wants (three things)
Line 7-- Who uses (three things)
Line 8-- Who gives (three things)
Line 9-- Who says (a direct quote)
Line 10-- Last name or synonymous descriptor

Following is an example of a bio-poem:

    Pam
    Teacher
    Strong, caring, dedicated, curious
Lover of her children, learning, and her students
Who believes all children can learn
Who wants a safe world for her children, her students to love to learn, and to have more time to write
Who uses her education, her experience, and the support of her family
Who gives her leadership to her students, her tenderness to her children, and her love of reading to her students
Who says, "A good book opens the door into another world."
    Chandler

To familiarize students with the bio-poem before they create one for the subject of a biography, Chandler has her students write poems for themselves. "To make it more interesting, I create a master where the center of the paper is lined text surrounded by 2 to 3 inches of blank space," she said. "Students write their bio-poems in the center area. Then they illustrate their poems around the outside of the text box. I show them how they can hide part of their drawing behind their writing. I illustrate this by using some type of full-page illustration. I cover the center with another sheet of paper so that parts of different objects are hidden behind the paper. This gives kids more of an idea of what I am asking them to do. They create some very interesting pieces this way.

"In addition to using bio-poems to represent a person from a biography, I use them with students in doing a character study," explained Chandler. "My favorite book to use for this is The Pinballs, by Betsy Byars. Kids really relate to the characters."

MORE BIO-POETRY

Heather Schacher, of Golden, British Columbia, is no stranger to the concept of the bio-poem. In fact she has her own version that she refers to as the "Getting to Know You" poem. As a new kindergarten teacher at Alexander Park Elementary School in Rocky Mountain School District #6, she hasn't had much opportunity to use this poetry-writing activity, but she holds onto it as a great example of an activity that encourages creativity and stimulates interest in both biographies and poetry.

"The Getting to Know You poem is an idea that an instructor gave in one of my language arts courses in university," recalled Schacher. "I think the poem is valuable because it makes the kids think about themselves in different ways. It makes them aware of themselves and others." Like Chandler's bio poem, this poem also has a set format.
